PORTLAND, Ore. – Sophomore
Caleb Goins (Scio, Ore.) and senior
Jennifer Bassett (Keizer, Ore.) were named Cascade Collegiate Conference Players of the Week in their respective sports Monday, as announced by the Portland-based conference office.
Bassett, a 5-foot-8 senior goalkeeper on the women's soccer team, was named Cascade Collegiate Conference Defensive Player of the Week after posting a pair of victories this weekend against Northwest and Evergreen. The four-year Warrior registered a combined 10 saves on 11 shots and picked up her sixth straight win that includes three shutouts.
As a full-time starter for the first time in her collegiate career, Bassett has recorded a team-leading 71 saves (avg. 4.44) and posted five shutouts. During the Warriors' current six-game winning streak, Bassett has allowed a mere five goals in 540 minutes for a Goals Against Average (GAA) of 0.83.
"I am happy for Jenn, as she played well this weekend," said fourteenth-year head coach
Marty Ziesemer. "Jenn has played well this season and has stepped into a crucial role for us. I am very pleased with how well she has performed between the pipes for our team."
Goins, a 5-foot-6 member of the men's cross country team, was named Cascade Collegiate Conference male Runner of the Week after capturing his second individual crown of the season Saturday at the ninth annual Warner Pacific XC Showcase at Westmoreland Park in Portland. With a time of 25:35.00, Goins outlasted Warner Pacific's Karim Shakalia by three seconds in helping lead Corban to a runner-up finish.
In two seasons as a Warrior, Goins has captured three individual titles that include last season's first annual Northwest Christian Invitational in Eugene, this year's season-opening Corban Invitational, and Saturday's Warner Pacific Invitational.
"I am happy for Caleb and he is very deserving," said seventh-year head coach
Norm Berney. "We have had a plan all season long for Caleb to continue to improve each race. He has followed the plan that we set forth and continues to improve. He is also running six mornings a week and the hard work is beginning to show in his strength and finishes."
This is the first-ever Player of the Week honor for Bassett, while Goins brings home his second honor of the season.
Corban's women's soccer team is currently in the midst of the six-game winning streak and has posted an overall win-loss record of 9-5-2 this season that includes a 6-1-0 mark in conference play. The Warriors will return to the field on Friday, October 23rd, when they take on the Raiders of Southern Oregon beginning at 2:00 p.m. at Warrior Field.
The men's cross country team is gearing up for their final race of the regular season on Saturday, October 24th, at the Oregon State Invitational beginning at 10:00 a.m. in Corvallis.
