BOX SCORES – GAME #1 | GAME #2

CALDWELL, Idaho
– Sophomore Trevor Winsor (Troutdale, Ore.) pitched a complete game in the opener to go along with fellow sophomore Nate Hiebert's (Lebanon, Ore.) combined 5-for-7 performance with two runs scored and two RBI, as Corban's baseball team earned a split with The College of Idaho, 7-2 & 3-4, Saturday afternoon at Wolfe Field.

In the opener, Corban scored thanks to a run-scoring single by senior Russ Johnston (Independence, Ore.) in the first inning that allowed fellow senior Craig Spicer (Vancouver, Wash.) to score from second after he registered a double down the left field line.

Wasting no time, The College of Idaho knotted the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the second inning thanks to a Matt Mejia single to right center that scored Alex O’Brien.

The visiting Warriors took the lead for good in the top of the third inning when Hiebert lead off the frame with a double down the right field line. The very next batter – junior Josh Warner (Independence, Ore.) – singled to right field allowing Hiebert to move to third before junior Matt Schmidt (Corvallis, Ore.) brought home Corban’s second run of the afternoon with a ground out to second that put the visiting Warriors up by a single run (2-1).

Clinging to its one-run lead, Corban exploded for five runs on six hits in the top of the fifth inning. Warner and Schmidt registered back-to-back singles before Spicer roped his first triple of the season that brought both runners home and made the score 4-1 in the Warriors’ favor. Johnston then reached base via a fielder’s choice bunt that drove home Corban’s fifth run of the game, as C of I attempted to get Spicer out at home. One batter later, sophomore Taylor Stiles (Santa Maria, Calif.) brought Johnston home with a single down the left field line that allowed Johnston to score and put the Warriors up 6-1. One batter later, sophomore Kyle Taylor (Clackamas, Ore.) scored Corban’s final run of the game on a throwing error by C of I’s cather that made the score 7-1 after four-and-a-half innings.

The College of Idaho got one run back in the bottom half of the inning on Cody Brubaker’s ninth home run of the season to make the deficit five runs (7-2).

Neither team would score again, as Corban earned its second win of the season against C of I following a season-opening 18-16 barn-burner.

In Game #2, Corban scored a pair of runs in the top of the second inning when Hiebert drove in a pair of runs on a bases loaded infield single that allowed Johnston and Taylor to score.

The College of Idaho would knot the game at 2-all in the bottom of the third inning when Luke Howarth run-scoring fielder’s choice bunt before Brubaker registered a run-scoring ground out to short.

In the top of the fifth inning, Corban would regain the lead thanks to a sacrifice bunt by Schmidt that allowed Hiebert to score following his lead-off double down the right field line that gave the visiting Warriors a one-run lead (3-2).

Neither team would score again until the bottom of the seventh inning when The College of Idaho got a game-tying single through the left side from Jordan Lanman before Brubaker ended the night cap with a game-winning single to center field that scored pinch-runner Jared Arehart and ended the contest with the final score reading 4-3 in favor of the host Coyotes.

Besides Hiebert’s hitting performance, a trio of Warriors – Warner, Spicer, and Taylor – each turned in two-hit showing in Game #1. On the mound for Corban, Winsor went the distance allowing two earned runs on seven hits to go along with four strikeouts. Game #2 saw senior Jason Braun (Dallas, Ore.) go the distance for the Warriors allowing four runs (two earned) on six hits to go along with a game-high tying three K’s.

The College of Idaho was led by Brubaker’s combined 3-for-9 performance with one run scored and three runs batted in. On the mound, Jake Bottari went the opening 5.0 innings in Game #1 allowing seven runs (six earned) on 11 hits before allowing a pair of relievers – Jason Barry and Chris Larsen – to pitch the final 4.0 innings. Game #2 saw Ben Rosen pitch the opening 5.1 innings allowing three earned runs on two hits before turning the ball over to Chad Yeggy for the final 1.2 scoreless innings en route to picking up the win.

With today’s results, Corban concludes the season at 11-35 overall and 9-23 in NAIA West play. Meanwhile, The College of Idaho concludes the regular season at 28-18 overall and 23-8 in NAIA action.
