CALDWELL, Idaho – Senior
Ben Potloff (Keizer, Ore.) scored a team-leading 15 points on 4-for-10 shooting from the field to go along with a 7-for-11 showing at the free throw line, but it was not enough as Corban's men's basketball team fell to The College of Idaho, 71-59, Friday night inside the J.A. Albertson Activities Center.
With tonight's result, Corban falls to 6-13 overall and 1-7 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play. Meanwhile, The College of Idaho improves to 7-8 overall and 3-5 in league play.
For the second game in a row, Potloff was aided in scoring by junior
Nash Keene (Aumsville, Ore.) and sophomore
Erik Cronrath (Battle Ground, Wash.) as the duo netted 13 and 11 points respectively on a combined 9-for-21 shooting from the field. Junior
Ian Logan (Aloha, Ore.) came off the bench for the third straight game and added eight points, while fellow junior
Deonte Johnson (Modesto, Calif.) tallied six points and a team-high seven rebounds.
The opening half was a see-saw battle that was decided by a pair of free throws, as C of I sank seven shots from the charity stripe compared to Corban's five en route to securing the two-point advantage (31-29) heading into the locker rooms. Both teams connected on 10 field goals and four three-pointers.
In the second half, The College of Idaho began to pull away from the visiting Warriors thanks to 15 made field goals while Corban connected on another 10. Despite holding the advantage in free throws made (9-to-8), the visiting Warriors were outscored by 10 points (40-30) en route to C of I taking home the 12-point victory (71-59).
The College of Idaho was led by Craig McGee, who tallied a game-high 23 points to go along with a game and career-high 22 rebounds. McGee was aided on the scoreboard by Matt Ballenger, who was the only other 'Yote in double figures with 19 points. Jabari McIntosh came off C of I's bench to aid McGee on the boards with seven rebounds, while Kelvin Potts handed out a game-high six assists.
As a team, Corban shot 20-for-61 (32.8%) from the field to go along with a 5-for-14 (35.7%) showing from beyond the three-point line and a 14-for-26 (53.8%) performance at the free throw line. On the other hand, The College of Idaho was 25-for-61 (41.0%) from the field, 6-for-20 (30.0%) from long distance, and 15-for-21 (71.4%) at the charity stripe.
The Warriors will return to the hardwood tomorrow night – Saturday, January 16th – against the NAIA's No. 22-ranked Mountaineers of Eastern Oregon beginning at approximately 7:30 p.m. inside Quinn Coliseum in La Grande.
NOTE: Tomorrow night's game between Corban and Eastern Oregon is part of the Mountaineers' Retro Weekend, as fans are encouraged to wear 80's style clothing to the event.
