PORTLAND, Ore. – Sitting just outside the playoff picture, Corban's women's basketball team picked up a much-needed victory over conference rival Concordia, 63-49, Friday night inside Cavalier Gymnasium as junior
Jennesa Miller (Mica, Wash.) scored a team-high 15 points off the bench on 5-for-8 shooting from the field.
With the win, Corban improves to 10-16 overall and 5-9 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play. Meanwhile, Concordia falls to 10-13 and 4-9 in league action.
Miller was aided scoring-wise by a trio of Warriors – senior
Monique Tribble (Coquille, Ore.), sophomore
Katie Steigleman (Eugene, Ore.), and freshman
Tess Bennett (Sutherlin, Ore.) – that scored in double figures thanks to 14, 11, and 10 points respectively. On the boards, Tribble and Bennett pulled down a team-leading seven rebounds each to go along with freshman
Emily Tsugawa's
(Gladstone, Ore.) game-high seven assists.
After watching Concordia score the game's opening bucket, Corban went on a 12-0 run over a four-plus minute span en route to securing a 10-point lead (12-2) following a Steigleman lay-in with 15:20 left. Almost seven minutes later, Corban would grab its largest lead of the opening half (23-10) after a Tribble lay-in with 8:31 on the clock. Concordia would get as close as eight points (28-20) thanks to a Taylor Helwig free throw before Corban settled for an 11-point half time lead (31-20) thanks to a three-pointer by sophomore Becky Buhler for the final points of the opening frame.
In the second half, Concordia would pull within six points (39-33) following a Kourtney Craft jumper with 13:33 to go. Over the next three-plus minutes, Corban would use a 10-4 run en route to securing a 12-point lead (49-37) lead following a Steigleman fast break lay-in with just under 10 minutes remaining. The Warriors never relinquished their lead and even extended it to as much as 15 points (60-45) thanks to a jumper in the paint by Bennett with 4:47 on the clock. Free throw shooting in the final minute by Corban would secure the Warriors' 10th victory of the season and wrapped up a season sweep over Concordia.
The host Cavaliers were led in scoring by Ann Snodderly, who tallied a game-high 16 points on 6-for-11 shooting from the field. Snodderly was aided scoring-wise by a pair of Cavaliers – Danielle Clauson and Rachel Scarpelli – who scored 10 points each to go along with Clauson's game-high nine rebounds.
As a team, Corban shot 24-for-60 (40.0%) from the field to go along with a 3-for-10 (30.0%) showing from beyond the three-point line and a 12-for-17 (70.6%) performance at the free throw line. On the other hand, Concordia was 21-for-56 (37.5%) from the field, 2-for-6 (33.3%) from long distance, and 5-for-9 (55.6%) at the charity stripe.
Corban will return to the court tomorrow night – Saturday, February 6th – against nationally-ranked Warner Pacific beginning at 5:30 p.m. inside C.C. Perry Gym in Portland.
