PORTLAND, Ore. – As announced earlier Monday by the league office, freshman right-handed pitcher
Jacob Kopra (Gresham, Ore.) took home his second Cascade Collegiate Conference Pitcher of the Week honor following an outstanding performance this weekend against the NAIA's No. 13-ranked Thunderbirds of British Columbia.
This is the first time this season that a pitcher has taken home the award more than once, as Corban last had two different hurlers win the award in the same season in 2008 when former Warriors Jason Braun and Brandon Wolters were given the honor less than 30 days apart.
Kopra, a 6-foot-4 first-year pitcher, held the highly-touted Thunderbird offense without a run over 7.0 strong innings on Saturday allowing a mere seven hits to go along with two strikeouts. Despite coming away without the victory, Kopra allowed only four runners to advance past second base during his outing against British Columbia at Volcanoes Stadium.
As the ace of the Warriors' pitching staff, Kopra is tied for the team lead in wins with two and has pitched a team-high 23.2 innings this season. In his first season of collegiate baseball, Kopra has a record of 2-1 to go along with an Earned Run Average of 4.18. During his time on the hill, Kopra has given up 11 runs (all earned) on 26 hits to go along with nine K's.
Corban is 6-10 overall this season, including an 0-4 mark in NAIA West play. The Warriors will return to the field tomorrow afternoon – March 9th – against cross town rival and NCAA Division III member Willamette beginning at 2:00 p.m. at "Spec" Keene Stadium.
